"Through an authentic awareness and understanding of both modern and historic festival rites, Rag and Bone combine archaic & timeless, anarchic & measured, risky & vibrant performance principles to deliver a very contemporary message about the value of social questioning and social celebration." Damien Wright, co-director Periplum
Our performances are colourful and elemental whirlwinds; with wild music, provocative and evocative characters and strange devices. They have at their heart the 'rough energy' of circus, charivari and fairgrounds, Punch and Judy, the 'anti masque', Tudor processions, mumming and medieval theatre; models that are powerful, full of fantasy, life, energy and danger. These vernacular traditions of celebration and ritual are reinterpreted through contemporary approaches to music, theatre, performance and visual art, making them alive for today.
Rag and Bone draw on a pool of artists, musicians, performers and makers who have a vast array of experience in processions, outdoor theatre, celebrations and street performance. We have worked with; Welfare State International, Macnas, Walk the Plank, Liverpool Lantern Company, Periplum, IOU Theatre, Footsbarn, Els commediants, Doegtroup, Theatre D'Complicite, Mal Pelo, Motionhouse Dance Company and The Bow Gamelan Ensemble. |
